Perth Scorchers have significantly bolstered their batting stocks for the 2022-23 Weber Women’s Big Bash League season by securing dynamic New Zealand international Maddy Green.

A long-term teammate of Scorchers skipper and fellow White Ferns regular Sophie Devine, Green has represented New Zealand 113 times (61 T20Is, 52 ODIs) since making her international debut in 2012.

Green’s powerful ball-striking was on display during a scintillating 62-ball century compiled during an ODI against Ireland in 2018.

The 29-year-old is equally capable of occupying the crease and turning the strike over when required, having played most positions in the top and middle-order for New Zealand, Auckland Hearts and Brisbane Heat.

Additionally, Green bowls useful off-breaks, is accomplished in the field, and possesses strong tactical nous, captaining Auckland to victory in the 2017-18 One-Day Domestic competition.

Reflecting on the opportunity to join Perth, Green said:

“Obviously the Scorchers won the last WBBL title and are a really good side, so when Shelley reached out to me, I was certainly keen to jump on board and play alongside some brilliant players.

“I know Sophie loves her time over in Perth and was super excited about what the group achieved last year. She also loves working with Shelley and the players and it sounds like a really great group to be part of.

“I loved playing in the WBBL in the past and, in my opinion, it’s the best T20 league in the world. As a cricketer, you want to be part of those competitions and to play against the best in the world, especially leading into the T20 World Cup early next year in South Africa.”

When asked to describe herself as a player, Green said:

“I’ve found my groove in the last few years, and the latter part of my career. I like to play aggressively and hit down the ground, and I enjoy taking the game on.

“I’ve had different experiences batting around the order. I opened the batting quite a bit at Brisbane with Beth Mooney, and I’ve batted down the order at four and five for New Zealand in the last couple of years.

“We’ll see what my role is in the side and I’ll adapt to that, and try to help Perth win as many games as possible.”

Perth Scorchers’ WBBL Head Coach Shelley Nitschke said:

“Maddy has plenty of international experience, and I think she has a lot to offer playing that middle-order role.

“She’s a fantastic fielder and a great person, so I reckon she’ll fit in really well and offer us some nice versatility. I also expect she’ll be an excellent mentor for our younger players.”
