Perth Scorchers have bolstered their bowling stocks for the 2022-23 KFC Big Bash League by signing experienced English seamer David Payne.
The 31-year-old has been one of the most consistent performers in English cricket for an extended period, taking 594 wickets across formats including 155 scalps from 126 T20s.
Payne, who plays for Gloucestershire and Welsh Fire, possesses a raft of variations that allow him to bowl at any stage of the innings, while he is capable of nudging 140km/h with his stock delivery.
A whippy left-armer, Payne’s stellar domestic form saw him selected for England’s One-Day International against the Netherlands on June 22.
Payne is expected to be available for the second half of Perth’s BBL|12 campaign, replacing England speedster Tymal Mills who is unavailable for the tournament due to a family emergency.
The Scorchers launch their title defence against Sydney Sixers at Optus Stadium today, in a grand final rematch themed ‘Home of the Champs’.

Reflecting on signing with the Scorchers, Payne said:
“I feel incredibly excited and lucky. I’ve always followed the Scorchers, with the links we’ve had at Gloucester – Michael Klinger, AJ Tye and Cameron Bancroft. I’ve also recently played in the T10 league with Peter Hatzoglou, so there’s a lot of friendly faces.
“I know how successful Perth are, so to be stepping into their dressing room is incredibly exciting and I can’t wait to get out there. The short notice has made it even more exciting – it’s the best Christmas present ever, to be honest.
“I’ve never played in WA but watched a few games at Optus Stadium and it’s a phenomenal ground. We see and hear that the pitches in Australia are a lot quicker than England, so I’m looking forward to that, and I’m really looking forward to the challenge in general.”
Reflecting on the recruitment of Payne, Perth Scorchers General Manager – High Performance Kade Harvey said:
“We’re excited to welcome David to the Scorchers at such short notice.
“His record on the English domestic scene is exceptional, and he has a lot of attributes that suit short format cricket – his ability to generate pace and bounce, his composure under pressure, and the variations he uses.
“David is also a left-armer, which provides balance to our bowling unit. He’ll be an important addition to our squad and we can’t wait to get him around the group.”
