Perth Scorchers fan favourite Andrew Tye will don the orange for at least another season, after signing a one-year contract extension with the Club.
Tye has been a key pillar of Perth’s attack since making his Scorchers debut during the 2014-15 KFC Big Bash League season, having downed tools as a carpenter just two years earlier.
The evergreen quick is confident he’ll enter the 2023-24 KFC Big Bash League season feeling on top of his game, following another stellar campaign.
“I’m delighted to be signing on and getting another extension as a 36-year-old,” Tye said.
“A few years ago, when I tore my medial ligament off the bone I thought my career was close to being done. Instead, I’ve made a few tweaks to my action and I’m going better than I ever have.”
The Scorchers veteran has been a valuable source of wickets this season, finishing second in the BKT Golden Arm Award and earning selection in the League’s official Team of the Tournament.
Tye also became the fourteenth player in MBBL history to play 100 matches, reaching the milestone during Perth’s Qualifier win against the Sydney Sixers.
The 36-year-old finished the regular season with 24 wickets, at an average of 18.45. He remains in second place on the MBBL’s all-time wicket-takers list with 143 scalps at an average of 19.33.
Across the BBL|12 season, Tye cemented his standing as a fan-favourite and the League’s best lurker, characterised by his impressive stare-offs with broadcasters and fans.
“We’ve always got the backing and support of coaches, support staff, captain and teammates,” the father-of-one said.
“We’re all so close and so confident with each other’s abilities and attributes that it just lends itself to a nice free, relaxed environment.
“Then you’ve got pests like me, I just have fun with it.”
Perth Scorchers will take the field for the BBL|12 Final against Brisbane Heat from 4:30PM AWST today.
The marquee match is the first time the Stadium will host a men’s Big Bash League Final, as the Scorchers aim to secure back-to-back championships.
“We’re all really excited to have a home final, and a home final at the Stadium. The hairs on the back of my neck are standing up already thinking about it,” Tye said.
“What WA fans have done this year to turn out for the Big Bash and the Perth Scorchers has been unreal.
“We’re expecting no different today and we’re expecting them to have a big part in, hopefully, our success by getting right behind us and cheering us on home.”
