Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised the performance of the United States men’s cricket team during the ICC T20 World Cup, which took place in the United States and West Indies this year. He made these remarks at an event for the Indian diaspora held at Nassau Coliseum in New York.
“Some days back here, the T20 World Cup took place. The USA team played so well in that competition. That team had so many Indian people who are living here and their contributions were witnessed by the whole world.”
During the 2024 ICC T20 World Cup, held from June 1 to June 29, the USA hosted 16 matches, including the highly anticipated match between India and Pakistan at Nassau County Stadium in New York, as well as games at Grand Prairie Stadium in Texas and Central Broward Park in Florida.
The USA performed well in the tournament, finishing second in the group stages with two wins and one loss. Notably, they achieved a thrilling Super Over victory against Pakistan and put up a strong fight against India, defending a modest total of 111 runs on a challenging pitch.
In the Super Eights, the USA lost all three matches, but they put up a commendable effort against finalists South Africa, losing by just 18 runs while chasing 195. This tournament marked the USA’s first appearance in a World Cup for both T20 and ODI formats.
Key performers for the USA included players with backgrounds in Indian U19 cricket. Saurabh Netravalkar took six wickets, including those of Indian stars Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, as well as Pakistan wicketkeeper-batter Mohammed Rizwan and South African captain Aiden Markram. Harmeet Singh, who played for India in the 2012 U19 World Cup and has domestic experience in Mumbai, contributed four wickets and scored 69 runs in four innings for the USA.
USA captain Monank Patel played a pivotal role by scoring a crucial half-century against Pakistan, leading his team to a score of 159/3.
India ultimately won the tournament, ending their ICC trophy drought after 11 years.
PM Modi arrived in New York as part of a three-day visit to the United States. During his trip, he attended the Quad Summit and held bilateral meetings with US President Joe Biden, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida.
