Transport Main Roads Partnership Continues

Queensland Cricket (QC) has thrown its support behind the Queensland Government’s Road Safety Week 2022 campaign in a quest to promote safe driving and reduce the death toll on the state’s roads.

The 2022 theme for Queensland Road Safety Week (QRSW) is road safety starts with me and is aimed at sparking conversations and reflecting on the role all Queenslanders play in staying safe on the state’s roads.

QC will continue its support of QRSW and the Department of Transport and Main Roads in 2022 via content and public appearances featuring Brisbane Heat players.

Charli Knott and Ellie Johnston from the Heat’s WBBL team were on hand during the EKKA last week to help drive road safety messaging, while the club’s social media channels will this week feature player content aimed promoting safe driving initiatives such as drink driving and mobile phone use.

Yellow will be a key theme for this year’s QRSW as the colour of road safety, while also being a colour that sparks positivity. During road safety week, landmarks across the state will be lit in yellow, with all Queenslanders asked to wear yellow and share yellow for road safety.

Andrew Mahon, General Manager of Land Transport Safety and Regulation at the Department of Transport and Main Roads, said QRSW marked an important date for Queenslanders to reflect on the positive action individuals can take to improve road safety across the state.

“Everyone plays a role in making our roads and paths safer. Sadly, the number of lives lost on our roads this year continues to rise, and events like Queensland Road Safety Week are important in our vision to raise awareness about road safety. This year we are asking the community to wear yellow and also reflect on the important question of why road safety starts with each of us. Every time you use the road you can control your actions and positively contribute to safer roads”.

Queensland Cricket Chief Executive Officer Terry Svenson said QC was proud to partner with the Department of Transport and Main Roads and show its support for QRSW.

“Road safety is a responsibility all Queenslanders undertake, and Queensland Cricket, including our staff, players, volunteers, and coaches, are proud to play our role in promoting and supporting this message.

“Road Safety Week is a particularly important time to remind our stakeholders of the role they play in keeping each other safe, while for our regional staff who spend many hours per week travelling between towns and clubs, it is vital they understand the positive impact they can have on their communities by setting the high standards we expect from them.

“The Department of Transport and Main Roads are a long-time partner of Queensland Cricket and the Brisbane Heat, and we are proud to promote road safety messages through our players and initiatives like our Big Bash Innings Break Show that we know is seen and enjoyed by thousands of kids, fans and families.”

Members of the public are encouraged to join the Heat and QC in sharing road safety messages and content to social media using #QRSW2022 with more resources and information available via the StreetSmarts website.

QC will continue a strong link with road safety with the upcoming finals of the StreetSmarts T20 Schools Challenge and the StreetSmarts Regional Tour getting underway in early October. The Streetsmarts T20 Schools Challenge is a boys and girls state-wide schools T20 competition across intermediate and open age groups, with regional finals taking place throughout September.

QC’s annual Streetsmarts Regional Tour sees QLD and Brisbane Heat players visit schools and clubs in regional Queensland, promoting cricket sign on and road safety messages.
