Queensland Cricket has expressed its support for today’s announcement from the Queensland Government that fans would need to be double vaccinated to attend events at venues such as the Gabba and Metricon Stadium from next month.
The opening of the State’s borders on 17 December will be reflected with new guidelines coming into effect for sporting events at major stadiums.
Queensland Cricket CEO Terry Svenson said:
“Queensland Cricket supports the Queensland Government’s decision to align the State’s opening up on 17 December with having maximum attendances for major events for fully vaccinated fans from that date,’’ he said.
“Becoming fully vaccinated is vital for all Queenslanders to return to a normal way of life, including having crowds at our matches at venues like the Gabba and Metricon Stadium. It’s the most important thing we can do to protect ourselves, our families and our communities from COVID-19.
“Queensland Cricket continues to support government, venue partners and other key stakeholders to ensure we create a safe environment for our fans and participants.”
“Under this plan, the Big Bash League games at the Gabba and Metricon Stadium from the 17th December, will be able to go ahead without restrictions these summer holidays, with the Brisbane Heat’s opening game at the Gabba on 19 December to be one of the initial events to proceed under the road-map provisions.”
The Brisbane Heat will play five games at the Gabba and two at Metricon Stadium on the Gold Coast in the KFC Big Bash League this summer.
The Heat will play one match, against the Melbourne Renegades at Metricon Stadium, on Monday 13 December prior to the opening of the Queensland border.
The Heat’s first Gabba match a week later, against the Sydney Thunder, will be held on Sunday 19 December when the double-vaccinated requirement for fans will apply.
Their other home matches feature the Melbourne Stars on Monday 27 December at the Gabba, the defending champion Sydney Sixers at Metricon Stadium on Tuesday 4 January, followed by Brisbane hosting the Hobart Hurricanes (Saturday 8 January), Adelaide Strikers (Wednesday 12 January) and Perth Scorchers (Wednesday 19 January), all at the Gabba.
