The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) banned open practice sessions for the Indian cricket team during their ongoing tour of Australia following disruptions during an open nets session in Adelaide. Thousands of fans had gathered to watch the Indian team train ahead of the second Test against Australia, which India lost by 10 wickets.
Reports indicated that some Indian players were “heckled” by fans and subjected to rude comments, with spectators jeering at their failed shots. In response, the BCCI requested Cricket Australia (CA) to restrict open net sessions for the rest of the tour to prevent such incidents.
During a post-match press conference after India’s defeat in the pink-ball Test, Indian skipper Rohit Sharma addressed the issue. While he did not confirm reports of players being heckled, Rohit emphasized the importance of keeping practice sessions private. He noted that these sessions involve strategic discussions between players and coaches, which should remain confidential.
“You know, the net sessions are very private, and this was the first time ever I saw so many people during the nets. When you’re training, when you’re practising, there are a lot of conversations that happen, and those conversations are very private. We don’t want anyone to hear those conversations. It is as simple as that because there’s a lot of planning,” Rohit said.
He added that fans should focus on attending Test matches rather than practice sessions. “There’s a lot of talking that happens. And the crowds are very close to that practice facility. There are five days of Test cricket. They can come and watch us there,” he stated.
India now aims to recover from the loss and take a 2-1 lead in the five-match series when they face Australia in the third Test at the Gabba in Brisbane. The team hopes to replicate their iconic victory at the Gabba during the 2020-21 tour, which secured them the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
