Rohit Sharma reportedly files complaint against Sunil Gavaskar with BCCI after Border-Gavaskar Trophy

Must Read

Indian cricket has been rocked by allegations that skipper Rohit Sharma filed a formal complaint with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) against legendary cricketer Sunil Gavaskar over what he perceives as unwarranted criticism of his performance. This controversy erupted during the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy and has drawn significant attention from fans and experts alike.

Before the series began, Rohit missed the first Test in Perth due to the birth of his second child. While the personal nature of his absence was understandable, Sunil Gavaskar openly criticized the decision, suggesting that Rohit should step aside as captain if unavailable. Gavaskar also recommended Jasprit Bumrah take over the leadership role.

Under Bumrah’s captaincy, India won the first Test, but Rohit’s return in the second match was marred by a string of poor performances. He managed only 31 runs across three Tests, drawing further criticism from Gavaskar. After a lackluster showing, Rohit decided to drop himself from the final Test in Sydney due to poor form, a decision that Gavaskar harshly criticized, stating, “If a captain doubts his place in the team, it’s time to retire.”

According to Crictracker, reports suggest the continuous scrutiny took a toll on Rohit mentally and emotionally, prompting him to lodge a complaint with the BCCI. According to a source, “Rohit felt that it was not necessary for Sunil Gavaskar to criticize him in that fashion and that’s why he complained to the BCCI about Gavaskar. All these added so much pressure that he was compelled to tell it all to BCCI.”

After the disappointing series, Rohit returned to domestic cricket, representing Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy. In a match against Jammu and Kashmir, he scored only 31 runs across two innings. Despite his ongoing struggles, this move signals his determination to rebuild his form and career.

Interestingly, Rohit and Gavaskar recently shared the stage during the 50th-anniversary celebrations of Wankhede Stadium. While the event marked a significant milestone, the underlying tension between the two was evident.

Rohit’s performance in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, where he averaged just 6.00 in three matches, raised questions about his future in Test cricket. Gavaskar’s public criticism extended to Rohit’s captaincy, suggesting he should relinquish the role.

Despite the controversies, Rohit remains focused on reclaiming his form, with fans anticipating his next steps in the Ranji Trophy and beyond. This challenging phase could serve as a turning point in his career as he strives to overcome adversity and silence his critics.
