The South Australian Cricket Association has commenced consultation on a proposal to strengthen and enhance the men’s West End Premier Cricket competition.
Two reviews of South Australian cricket, including a 2020 study by one of Australia’s foremost cricketers Mike Hussey, stressed the importance of a strong and competitive Premier Cricket structure in helping to better develop and retain the cricket talent within our state.
“SACA is proposing to establish a two divisional model for first and second grade. This will provide tougher competition week-in, week-out to significantly enhance the strength and quality of men’s Premier Cricket,” SACA Chief Executive Officer Charlie Hodgson said.
“This proposal is designed to better develop the great cricket talent in our state, and ensure Premier Cricket remains relevant and appealing in an increasingly crowded sporting landscape. We want to hear from the clubs, players and cricket community about our plan.”
Under the proposal the competition would be structured with six teams in division one and seven in division two. There would be promotion and relegation of one club each season between the divisions.
“No club currently playing West End Premier Cricket will be removed from the competition under our proposal. We are seeking to create a stronger and tougher competition within the current West End Premier Cricket structure,” Mr Hodgson said.
If accepted, the new competition structure would commence in the 2023/24 season.
There will be information and feedback sessions on the proposed new structure and all members of the South Australian cricket community are invited to attend.
