After Jay Shah and Ashish Shelar vacated their roles as secretary and treasurer of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Devjit Saikia and Prabhtej Bhatia are set to step into these positions.
Both candidates submitted their nominations unopposed at the BCCI office on Saturday. The nominations will undergo scrutiny on January 6, with a by-election scheduled during the BCCI Special General Meeting (SGM) on January 12.
AK Joti, a former chief election commissioner of India, has been appointed as the electoral officer to oversee the process.
Jay Shah resigned from BCCI to assume the role of chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC), while Ashish Shelar stepped down after accepting a ministerial position in the Maharashtra government. As per BCCI regulations, individuals holding ministerial or government positions are ineligible to serve as office bearers.
Prabhtej Bhatia, nominated by the Chhattisgarh State Cricket Sangh, is set to replace Shelar as treasurer. Devjit Saikia, currently serving as BCCI joint secretary, hails from the Assam Cricket Association and will take over as secretary. Saikia’s elevation will leave the joint secretary position vacant, with BCCI yet to announce plans for filling the role.
The terms for Saikia and Bhatia will span three years, with the possibility of re-election for up to three terms, provided they observe a mandatory three-year cooling-off period between terms.
