India fast bowler Mohammed Shami addressed his absence from the Test squad for the upcoming tour of Australia for the five-match Border-Gavaskar Trophy series on Saturday.

His comments followed India’s recent loss to New Zealand, marking their first home Test defeat in 12 years and ending an 18-series winning streak dating back to 2013.

Shami has been sidelined since sustaining an ankle injury during the 2023 ODI World Cup final last November. He underwent surgery in February and has since been rehabilitating at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru.

He expressed, “Putting in my efforts and getting better with my bowling fitness day-by-day. Will continue working hard towards getting ready for the match and to play domestic red ball cricket. Sorry to all cricket fans and BCCI too, but very soon I’m ready to play red ball cricket, love you all.”

Earlier this week, a report stated that Shami is expected to return to competitive action on November 6 when Bengal faces Karnataka in the ongoing Ranji Trophy tournament. He is also set to play in the following match against Madhya Pradesh.

If Shami can demonstrate his match fitness, the selectors may consider including him in the squad for the Australia series.
