In the week following the fixture announcement and the confirmation of the return of Stephen O’Keefe, the Sydney Sixers have scored again ahead of KFC BBL|12 with the signing of former Australian captain Cameron White.

The all-rounder, who played all three formats for Australia and for Melbourne Stars, Melbourne Renegades and Adelaide Strikers in the BBL, before turning his hand to coaching as an assistant in Adelaide, will act as the deputy to Sixers’ head coach Greg Shipperd.

The pair have had a long and successful relationship that began when Shipperd was working with the Victorian team and White was their youngest ever captain.

While he played four Tests for Australia, it was in the shorter formats of the game where White shone, representing his country with aplomb, while playing in the IPL, BBL and on the English domestic scene.

White said the lure of working with Shipperd was strong.

“I’m obviously very excited by the move and looking forward to working with the master coach,” White said.

“It’s been a little while since we worked together going back to my Victorian state days in a player/coach relationship.

“This is obviously newer with Shippy the coach and me as his assistant, but we know each other well and we have similar views on the game.

“The one constant is I am still looking to learn as much as I can from him.”

The 38-year-old also lauded the quality of the Sixers’ roster.

“The Sixers have a very strong squad, with some real experience and some great players who have been very successful over recent few years,” he said.

“The squad looks strong again for this season. The depth of talent in NSW is always significant and this squad reflects that.”

Shipperd said White was a natural leader and communicator during his playing days and those skills transferred well into coaching.

“Cameron demonstrated his leadership from a very early stage of his professional cricket career and he is a great communicator – two skills that are important to coaching,” Shipperd said.

“He is someone that is well respected in the game and to lure him over to the Sixers is a real win for our team.”

Shipperd paid tribute to former assistant Gavan Twining after the experienced mentor took on the fulltime head coach role with the NSW Breakers last summer.

“Gav has been a huge asset to the Sixers for a long time and has taken a well-deserved next step on his coaching journey. We wish him well and he knows he is welcome to walk through our doors anytime,” Shipperd said.

Tickets for this summer’s Sixers WBBL and BBL matches go on-sale to the public at 2pm, August 18 (AEST).
