The Sydney Sixers have finalised their remaining list spot ahead of the opening weekend of Weber WBBL|10, securing sought-after rising star, Caoimhe Bray, for the next three seasons.
Touted as one of the brightest up-and-comers in the country, Bray is no stranger to the big stage, despite having just celebrated her 15th birthday in September.
Born and raised in Denman, in the state’s Hunter Region, Bray made her first appearance for Denman Junior Cricket Club’s Under 11 side in 2017, at just eight-years-old.
The standout performer in last summer’s NSW Under 18 Brewer Shield, Bray led the run-scoring for the competition, notching an eye-watering 955 runs across the season.
The then 14-year-old rounded out her season with bang, notching triple figures (123) in her side’s semi-final, before following up a week later, with a remarkable double-century (202 from 134) to lead Greater Hunter Central Coast to their maiden Brewer Shield title.
Selected in Cricket Australia’s Under 19 squad for the tri-series in Brisbane earlier this month, the allrounder starred in a breakout match, notching 84 runs in Australia’s win over New Zealand, before sealing victory with 4-20 from her eight overs.
In a familiar story to one of her lifelong role models – and her now captain – Ellyse Perry, Bray is a dual athlete, managing both cricket and soccer throughout the year.
A goalkeeper for the CommBank Junior Matildas, the teenager made her international debut in the sport during the AFC Under 17 Women’s Asia Cup in Indonesia earlier this year.
Signing on with the Sixers for the Spring Challenge in recent weeks, Bray made appearances in all four of the side’s matches, collecting five wickets, including one of the most in-form names in the competition, Laura Harris, at North Sydney Oval.
Sixers General Manager, Rachael Haynes said the club was ecstatic to welcome the bright young star to the side.
“We are over the moon to have landed Caoimhe at the Sixers.
“We’ve seen Caoimhe’s growth, rising through the NSW pathway ranks, and more recently, how seamlessly she slotted into our group during the Spring Challenge, and we have no doubt, she’ll grab this next opportunity with both hands.
“Her talent is evident – she’s an outstanding young player – but she’s also a terrific person who is keen to listen and to learn, and we know what a brilliant opportunity she will have to spend time with some of the best players in the world.
“We’re looking forward to welcoming Caoimhe, and her family, into our club, and we know our Sixers fans will make her feel right at home.”
The Sixers will officially begin the hunt for the Weber WBBL|10 championship on Sunday, facing the Melbourne Renegades in Adelaide.
Sixers fans will have the opportunity to see their side in action at North Sydney Oval on October 29, November 1 and November 14, as well as at the SCG on Sunday, November 10.
