Few people have more experience playing in the Sydney Smash than Daniel Hughes.

The batsman is one of the few people in the Big Bash to have represented both the Sixers and the Thunder in the local derby. Hughes joined the Sixers in BBL|02, spent two seasons at cross-town rivals the Thunder before returning home in BBL|06.

He has been a mainstay in the Magenta lineup since, and always looks forward to the Sydney derbies every season given his history across the two clubs.

“It is a huge game and something you always look at on the calendar when the Big Bash comes around,” said Hughes.

“I have a lot of New South Wales teammates on the Thunder, so we always try to get one over them.”

The Thunder squad also includes some former Sixers in Daniel Sams and Gurinder Sandhu, and Hughes expects a bit of back and forth between the rival teams.

“A bit of niggle is great for the game, why not go out there and have a crack at each other,” said Hughes.

“I am looking forward to it, both teams are playing really well so hopefully we get a big crowd out there at Sydney Showground Stadium on Boxing Day and I hope it is a good contest.”

Hughes would love nothing more than to see Sixers fans make their way to Olympic Park for the Sydney Smash, and turn the Thunder’s home ground into a sea of Magenta on Boxing Day.

“Get out there,” was Hughes message to Sixers fans

“The Sydney Smash is awesome, it is always a good game with two really good lists going at it.

“We always have a close game against them, we have had a couple of super overs and it always goes down to the last over.”
