Less than a month after claiming a second straight KFC Big Bash League crown, the Sydney Sixers have begun preparing for their title defence by securing the services of key fast bowler Ben Dwarshuis for a further three years.Dwarshuis, who debuted for the Sixers in BBL|04, is the club’s second highest ever wicket-taker behind Sean Abbott, having claimed 85 wickets in 69 matches, including 24 wickets this season.
The 26-year-old left armer played a crucial role in the BBL|10 final, snaring 3/37 including the important wickets of Josh Inglis and Mitch Marsh.
Sixers head coach Greg Shipperd said not re-signing Dwarshuis was never a consideration.
“Ben Dwarshuis is a valued member of our squad on and off the field and his performances over a long period have contributed to our sustained success,” Shipperd said.
“Ben bowls many of the toughest overs for us in the powerplay, power surge and at the death.
“He’s flexible within the bowling unit and contributes with the bat and in the field.
“In my opinion he would not be out of place in an Australian team.”
Dwarshuis said he was looking forward to continuing his career in magenta.
“I’m really excited to lock in the next three seasons at the Sixers,” Dwarshuis said.
“It is a great club on and off the field and I hope I can continue to contribute wherever I am required.
“BBL10 was a challenge for everyone but we were able to work together well and came away with another win. It was very satisfying and worth the effort.”
Dwarshuis is in contention to be named in the Sixers’ Team of the Decade that will be announced tomorrow.
