The Sydney Sixers are set to proudly celebrate the Weber WBBL|09 First Nations Round, in their match on Friday night against the Hobart Hurricanes at North Sydney Oval.

Wearing a new First Nations shirt this season, the artwork was designed by prominent artist and proud Wiradjuri woman, Lua Pellegrini and tells the story of the Sixers club and community.

Pellegrini, an accomplished young artist, also designed the 2022-2024 Marn Grook guernsey “Duguwaybul Yindyamangidyal” for fellow Sydney team, the Sydney Swans.

The front of the shirt features all three of the Sixers home grounds – the SCG on Gadigal Country, North Sydney Oval on Cammeraygal Country and Coffs International Stadium on Gumbaynggirr Country – with Sixers fans represented by six ‘U’ shaped symbols, representing people.

The ocean marks a significant aspect the design, highlighting the importance of Country for both the Gadigal people and Gumbaynggirr people as Saltwater Communities.

The circles within the design represent the various pieces of the Sixers community including the players, their families, coaches, staff, members and supporters, while the design featured on the sleeves and back of the shirt represents community coming together the way in which we are all connected to one another.

Head of Sydney Sixers, Rachael Haynes said the club was proud to wear Pellegrini’s design.

“It’s an honour for our club to wear this year’s shirt designed by Lua Pellegrini. We are immensely proud to take part in First Nations Round once again this season, celebrating First Nations culture and people.

“Lua is an extremely talented artist but she’s also an inspiring young person and highly respected member of the community. She’s a fantastic role model for young people and we’re so pleased to welcome her into our club.

“We’re looking forward to working with Lua throughout the remainder of our WBBL season and through the BBL summer, having her engage with our playing groups and staff.”

The Sixers and Hurricanes will additionally take part in a Barefoot Circle and Welcome to Country pre-game, with cultural activities taking place around the ground throughout the match.

Friday’s match begins at 7.10pm (AEDT) and will be broadcast live via Channel 7, Fox Cricket, Kayo and ABC Radio.
