The Sydney Sixers will honour youth cancer patients and survivors in a BBL match when they take on the Adelaide Strikers at the SCG.

The gesture, that highlights the club’s commitment to helping regional cancer patients with desperately needed emergency accommodation, continues a more than decade long association between the Sixers and Sony Foundation.

This year is the club’s 11th year of the ‘Sixers Can, You Can’ Campaign, in support of Sony Foundation’s youth cancer program, You Can.

Player names on the jerseys will be swapped with words of inspiration they selected to honour the patients to raise awareness in the community of the battle these young people face, and to show them that the Sydney Sixers community back them.

Sixers star Jordan Silk said “We love the partnership with You Can and being able to support people like Darcey is so important to us when speaking to youth cancer patient Darcey and his father.

“It’s phenomenal that someone takes the time just to do the little things, which when you’re in your moment of need you don’t realise how much you appreciate it.” Darcey’s father, on his family’s experience with the Sixers and the Sony Foundation.

Silk reflected after opening some time getting to know Darcey “This is a game a lot of the guys get a huge kick out of, it gives us a greater perspective on life, and what people like Darcey have to go through at such a young age, it’s something small that we can do and it has such a big impact on us as people.”

It’s shocking to hear that regional youth cancer patients face extra challenges when they come to the city for treatment. 1 in 3 young people with cancer are from regional areas and accommodation while they get treatment in Sydney can cost thousands of dollars. Every $100 raised = 1 night of accommodation so we hope to raise funds and awareness.

We are honoured to play on their behalf on Saturday and every player in our squad will be thinking of that special person they are playing for and be motivated for a win!

How Can Sixers Fans Get Involved?

All jerseys will be signed by players and up for auction following the match. Sixers Fans will be able to get involved via bidding for a jersey or donating to the Sony Foundation. Every $100 we raise equals one night of accommodation for a regional cancer patient and their family in Sydney at a Quest Apartment.
