After initially stepping down from his role as head coach of the Sydney Sixers’ WBBL team following his full-time appointment as an assistant with the Australian Women’s Cricket Team, experienced mentor Ben Sawyer will return for WBBL|07.
With a short timeframe before the tournament, and with the a pause in international duties during the WBBL season, Cricket Australia agreed to a request from Cricket New South Wales for Sawyer to coach the Sixers for this season.
Sawyer will join fellow Australian Assistant Coach Shelley Nitschke as a WBBL Head Coach this season, with the pair leading the Sixers and Scorchers respectively.
Following The Hundred in the UK where he is currently coaching Birmingham Phoenix, Sawyer will return home for Australia’s international series against India before joining the Sixers for the WBBL.
Shawn Flegler, Cricket Australia Female High Performance Manager, said:
“We have agreed to Cricket New South Wales’ request for Ben to coach the Sydney Sixers in the WBBL this season,” Flegler said.
“Ben is passionate about growing as a coach and we’re committed to supporting opportunities to help in the development of our coaches.”
Sawyer said he was grateful for the opportunity to continue his association with the Sixers that began before WBBL|01.
“I am very excited that Cricket Australia and Cricket NSW have been able to come to an agreement here so that I can continue to work with the Sixers this summer,” Sawyer said.
“The decision allows me to continue my development as a coach and also work with the exciting talent in the squad we have assembled for the Sixers.”
