The Sydney Sixers have received a boost on the eve of the KFC BBL|14 season, with Australian superstars Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood signing onto the club’s supplementary player list for the season ahead.
Starc, who was a marquee supplementary player with the club last summer, is set to be joined this season by his fast-bowling comrade, Hazlewood, in Sixers pink.
Due to their commitments across the Australian international summer, the pair are unlikely to take the field, however the quicks will be involved throughout the summer in an off-field capacity, where their schedules allow.
Introduced by the league ahead of last season, the supplementary player list allows Cricket Australia contracted players to be signed by clubs as marquee additions, if they are expected at the time of the contracting period, to be unavailable for the Big Bash season.
The signing of the duo comes as an additional boost, on the back of the club smashing its existing all-time membership record earlier in the season, with the Sixers now proudly boasting over 12,700 members.
Two of the foundation members of the club, both Starc and Hazlewood signed on for the inaugural season of the Big Bash, with the star pair becoming mainstays in the early years of the competition.
Crowned champions in BBL|01, the pair additionally claimed the Champions League Twenty20 title with the club over a decade ago, lifting the trophy in 2012 alongside current Australian captain, Pat Cummins.
Starc and Hazlewood are additionally set to be reunited with their NSW head coach Greg Shipperd, as well as Australian teammate Steve Smith, and long-serving Sixers skipper, Moises Henriques, with the club captain on the precipice of a fourteenth season in the Big Bash.
Sixers General Manager, Rachael Haynes said the pair are Sixers people through and through.
“Mitch and Josh are both foundation members of our club and have been a part of the Sixers for a long time, so any opportunity for us to engage them throughout the season is a win for our club and a win for our fans.
“Both of the guys have great relationships with Greg and the playing group and having them involved in any capacity will always be a boost for our group. Mitch and Josh have been a part of the fabric of our club, and we’re excited for them to be back as part of the Sixers family this summer.”
The Sixers are set to kick off their KFC BBL|14 season on Monday December 16, hosting the Melbourne Renegades at the SCG.
