The Sydney Sixers are a step closer to finalising their list for the upcoming Weber WBBL|09 season with the addition of up-and-comer Gabby Sutcliffe announced today.

The leading wicket-taker for the ACT Meteors in the Women’s National Cricket League (WNCL) last summer, Sutcliffe collected 13 wickets across 12 appearances, including best figures of 4/35 against reigning champions Tasmania earlier this year.

Getting her first taste of the WBBL with Sydney Thunder in the title winning WBBL|06 season, the right-arm quick was called up to replace Thunder star Hannah Darlington, playing one game in lime green.

Born and raised in Corowa on the banks of the Murray River, Sutcliffe rose through the ranks of the NSW pathway before relocating to Canberra for study, breaking into the Meteors squad ahead of the 2020/21 season.

Making her debut for ACT against NSW in March 2021, Sutcliffe collected 3/66 in her first appearance, picking up the valuable wickets of Australian stars and soon-to-be Sixers teammates, Alyssa Healy and Ashleigh Gardner.

Head of Sydney Sixers, Rachael Haynes said the 21-year-old has earnt her opportunity through a number of impressive performances with the Meteors.

“Gabby is someone who has been around the Big Bash before, being a part of the Thunder squad a few years ago. She has continued to toil away with the ACT and earns an opportunity to come back to the WBBL, this time with the Sixers.

“In terms of her skillset, she’s a player who attacks the stumps. She’s an enthusiastic young player who is keen to learn and will fit in well with our group.

“It’s a really exciting opportunity for Gabby to get to work with one of the world’s best coaches (in Charlotte Edwards) and learn from such a high calibre group of players.”

Speaking about her opportunity with the Sixers this summer, Sutcliffe said she couldn’t wait to get started.

“I’m super keen to be joining the Sixers this season. I’m really excited to be given this opportunity to be around and learn off some the best players in the world at the moment.

“Hopefully I can pick up a few things from this experience to keep adding to my game.”

The Sixers will open the WBBL|09 season next Thursday, October 19 at North Sydney Oval, facing the Melbourne Stars in a must-see clash.
