The Sydney Sixers will hold our second WBBL Pride Party match against the Hobart Hurricanes on Saturday afternoon at North Sydney Oval, the first of back-to-back matches on the weekend

South African captain and leg-spinner Dane van Niekerk has spoken of her excitement about playing in her first Pride Party match for the Sydney Sixers, having missed last year’s game after she cut her hand while slicing an avocado the evening before the fixture.

The Sixers meet the Perth Scorchers on Sunday, at Hurstville Oval.

The Sixers are committed to using education to create a safe environment for the LGBT+ community to watch and play cricket and have developed a 3-year strategy aimed at delivering upon this purpose. Saturday is one very important part of that.

Van Niekerk and her wife, fellow South African Marizanne Kapp are both an integral part of the Sixers family and Saturday’s match is an important occasion for both.

“Sport unites everyone, it doesn’t matter who you are, what your sexuality is, what your gender is, it should include everyone,” van Niekerk said.

“Everybody loves cricket for cricket and not for any other reason. I think that’s why it’s important for me, first of all, and for the team.

“Being part of a team and club that accepts you no matter what, makes you feel comfortable, and when you’re comfortable, you can really enjoy yourself and perform.

“I missed last year’s party because of an avocado incident, I’m really excited this year to be part of it, hopefully I won’t cut anything leading up to the game”.

v. Hobart Hurricanes

12 matches – 11 wins, 1 loss (the Hurricanes defeated the Sixers for the first time in the WBBL last season at North Sydney Oval)

The Sixers currently sit equal first on the table with the Sydney Thunder. Both have registered three wins from five matches with the other two abandoned due to rain.

In an important club milestone, Erin Burns celebrated her 50th match in magenta during the Sixers win over the Brisbane Heat on Wednesday in Blacktown.
