Sydney Thunder is committed to supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities across the Thunder Nation.

Through a variety of initiatives and programs, the club strives to provide opportunities for Indigenous people to celebrate their culture and connect to their communities through sport.

With players selected from across the Thunder Nation, the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander T20 Cup exists to connect Indigenous cricketers to pathway programs and empower them to be role models in their communities.

This year, the Sydney Thunder teams, supported by Homestar Finance, are set to take on the Sydney Sixers during NAIDOC Week from 12-13 November*. It will be the first time that both the men’s and women’s teams will compete at the same time.

Last season saw Thunder win the men’s competition against the Hobart Hurricanes in Orange and the women’s team take out the women’s title over the Sixers in Sydney.

According to Julie Muir (Wiradjuri), who is the captain of the Homestar Finance Women’s Thunder XI, the initiative provides a great platform for Indigenous cricketers but is about more than just cricket.

“I can’t wait to see the next cricket stars emerge from this tournament,” said Muir.

“A lot of us can’t be around family and friend at the moment so this tournament is exactly what we need to take our mind off things.

“I can’t wait to be around our mob to share our stories, support each other and play the game we all love.”

Homestar Finance have continued their support of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander T20 Cup.

“At Homestar Finance we value supporting the wider community we live and work in, especially when it involves Youth, Education and Sport,” said Mandy Sly, Homestar Finance Executive.

“Homestar’s continued support in the development of Indigenous Sport, encouraging participation especially for girls and young women is rewarding.”
