Two KFC BBL fixtures scheduled for Manuka Oval this summer

Sydney Thunder will return to Canberra this summer for a pair of blockbuster KFC Big Bash League games including their BBL|11 season opener against the Brisbane Heat on Monday 6 December.

With the support of the ACT Government, the Thunder will then return to Manuka Oval on Tueday 28 December to play last season’s runner’s up, the Perth Scorchers.

Manuka hosted 13 games during last summer’s BBL as teams from around the country were locked out of their home state at various stages due to COVID-19 restrictions.

This year, with a full home and away schedule planned, and existing Venue Hire Agreements in place, the Thunder will return to Sydney Showground Stadium for their other five home games.

“Manuka was a fantastic venue last year that was able to step in and host more than a dozen BBL games when the competition really needed it so we are excited to be able to come back for two Sydney Thunder games this summer,” Cricket NSW CEO Lee Germon said.

“There is no doubt that Canberra is a second home for the Thunder and they have had some memorable games there.

“Hopefully the locals can get behind their team again and the Thunder can put on a great show before we return to our spiritual home in Sydney’s west.”

ACT Chief Minister Andrew Barr said the Thunder would be welcomed to Canberra.

“Off the back of successful summers of cricket at Manuka Oval it will be great to see the BBL return to Canberra,” Barr said.

“Canberrans love their cricket and have embraced the Sydney Thunder. We look forward to seeing them in action on 6 December.”

Alex Hales scored the fastest half-century in Thunder history to propel his side to a then-record total of 219.
