HomeWorld Thunder Nation Cup community trials continue across February and March

Picturesque Bankstown Oval hosted the first of the HomeWorld Thunder Nation Cup trials taking place across Sydney when players vying for selection in the Nepalese community’s team padded up last Friday night.

The players gave their all, displaying incredible enthusiasm – and skill – as selectors picked the first five members of the squad. The remaining six players will be selected at the Nepalese Gala Day on Sunday 21 February at Beaman and Gough Whitlam Parks in Earlwood.

Three of the five players who were selected have played in previous Homeworld Thunder Nation Cup campaigns, but the excitement in debutant Yuvraj Malla’s voice was unmistakeable as he said what his selection meant to him.

“I feel blessed and I thank you so much for providing this opportunity,” he said.

Another first-time representative, Yubraj Jaisi, said it was special to represent Australia’s Nepalese community through a Sydney Thunder initiative.

“It is possible because of Sydney Thunder’s great help,” he said. “I, personally, and, on behalf of my country, want to thank Sydney Thunder for igniting the sense of brotherhood and togetherness through this beautiful game of cricket.”

Abhinav Gnyawali, who has played in the HomeWorld Thunder Nation Cup previously, summed up the collective feeling about what the competition means.

“Cricket is one of the things that glues us all together so it’s great to have the chance to share the field with one another,” he said.
