Superstar quick to remain at the club until the end of BBL|12

Sydney Thunder all-time leading wicket-taker Daniel Sams has reaffirmed his commitment to the Thunder Nation, signing a contract extension that will see him remain at the club until the end of BBL|12.

The left-arm quick dominated the KFC Big Bash League last summer, finishing with a record-breaking 30 wickets at an average of 15.37, overtaking Kane Richardson’s record of 24.

A breakout 12 months has also seen the 27-year-old earn national selection for the first time. He is currently in England with the Australian Men’s T20 and ODI squad before he will join the Delhi Capitals for the Indian Premier League.

Sams, who has played 31 games for Thunder since joining the club in BBL|08, said he is excited to be part of the long-term future of the club.

“I’ve really enjoyed my first two years at the Thunder,” Sams said.

“We’ve got an awesome bunch of players, great support staff and the support we get from the Thunder Nation is fantastic, so it just made sense to commit for the next three years.

“It’s really exciting being part of this club at the moment and looking ahead to the future we should have some really good success.

“We’re gradually getting better and better and I think this year is going to be a really strong year for us.”

Thunder coach Shane Bond said securing his star quick has been a priority.

“Dan is a key part of our team,” Bond said.

“We’ve got a core group of players at Thunder that we’re trying to keep around and Dan is one of those. We want to be a finals team every year and part of that is having a group of guys that understand how each other play.

“Dan’s an extremely exciting talent and he’s just getting better year on year.

“He’s now getting experience with the Australian squad and he’s going to get Indian Premiere League experience as well, so we think his game is going to go from strength to strength which is really exciting for the club.”

Sydney Thunder is set to open its tenth KFC BBL campaign on 5 December 2020 against the Melbourne Stars at the MCG, before playing its first game at Sydney Showground Stadium on 8 December 2020.
