Star opener just six runs away from becoming the highest overseas run scorer in Big Bash history

Thunder batter Alex Hales may not have started BBL|11 the way he would’ve liked, but when he walks out to the middle against the Melbourne Stars tomorrow he is within reach of a major milestone.

The English import is just 6 runs away from becoming the highest overseas run scorer in Big Bash history.

It’s a milestone that would mean a lot to Hales, who burst on the scene in BBL|02 with an explosive 89 for the Melbourne Renegades against the Sixers at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

That innings was a taste of what was to come when Hales eventually joined the Thunder, most recently hitting 543 runs for the club during BBL|10.

“The BBL is a tournament that holds some great memories for me,” said Hales. “It would be an awesome achievement and one I would be really proud of.”

The impending milestone shows not only how well Hales plays when he comes to Australia, but also how much he enjoys coming to the country to play year-after-year.

“Any opportunity I have to come and play in Australia means a hell of a lot,” said Hales.

“I have been coming here since I was about 18 or 19 playing for various club sides and got a chance in the Big Bash many moons ago – probably eight or nine years ago.

“It’s a country that holds a lot of great memories and it is very close to my heart.”

If Hales reaches the milestone against the Stars, he’ll pass the record currently held by fellow Englishman and former Melbourne batter Luke Wright.

“I’ve spent a lot of time with Luke with certain franchises in England and this year in The Hundred,” said Hales.

“He’s been a fantastic player for a very long time and an even better bloke.”
