Thunder Nation Cup starts on Sunday.

The nation’s capital will host the start of the HomeWorld Thunder Nation Cup this Sunday with close to 150 cricketers – whose origins stretch from various points on the compass – involved.

Wet weather intervened in Canberra when the Thunder Nation Cup was scheduled to begin on 1 November and each of the 16 teams are hoping the weather Gods are kind this weekend.

The tournament coincides with Sydney Thunder’s opening five games of BBL|10 at Manuka Oval in Canberra.

Last weekend, 19-year-old leg-spinner Tanveer Sangha became the first Thunder Nation Cup participant to make his Big Bash debut.

The fourth edition of the ACT’s HomeWorld Thunder Nation Cup, which was initiated by Sydney Thunder to bring individuals and communities together through cricket, will showcase skills that were forged in Bangladesh, Nepal, India, Pakistan, New Zealand and countries in between.

Sydney Thunder’s Acting General Manager Chris Botherway said the HomeWorld Thunder Nation Cup that’s staged annually in Canberra, the Riverina and Sydney, was a special part of the fabric in the Big Bash League club’s identity.

“The HomeWorld Thunder Nation Cup gives players from a diverse range of backgrounds the chance to experience the fun and excitement of the Big Bash while proudly representing their community,” said Botherway.

“We’re fortunate to have partners such as HomeWorld who continue to support our efforts to make a real and meaningful difference to our communities.”

Trudi Busch, Director of Marketing, Sponsorship & Community, HomeWorld Group of companies, said it was rewarding to be involved in a tournament that embraces Australia’s multicultural communities by celebrating universal passions of cricket, community, and cuisine.

“Through initiatives such as the HomeWorld Thunder Nation Cup, we’re able to help bring communities together and to celebrate culture through cricket,” said Busch. “It allows the values that bind us to Sydney Thunder to go beyond the cricket field and into everyday life.”
