Thunder’s game against Renegades relocated from Sydney Showground Stadium to Melbourne

Sydney Thunder’s Acting Captain Chris Green said while it’s disappointing the KFC Big Bash League has moved the team’s January 19 match against the Renegades from Sydney Showground Stadium to Melbourne, he’s urged Thunder Nation to stay strong.

The GambleAware match between the two teams will now be played at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on January 19 at 4:10pm AEDT.

The League said the change was necessary because of the challenges the COVID-19 pandemic has presented the BBL and its clubs. However, Green has called for all Thunder supporters to rally behind their team as it fights to secure a home final.

“It really has been great feeling all your support this year, both at home at Sydney Showground Stadium and on the road,” Green said, “That’s why we’re really disappointed our last two games have been moved [to Melbourne].

“The boys are pushing hard to secure that final at [Sydney] Showground Stadium, so please keep sending in your messages of support – throw it behind us; we’re pushing hard and hopefully we’re entertaining you all at home.

“Your support means so much to us, and its what’s kept us going on the road.”

Alistair Dobson, Cricket Australia’s General Manager, Big Bash Leagues, said the BBL had no choice but to reschedule the match.

“The challenges of the pandemic have led us to making some difficult decisions,” he said. “But our priority has always been the safe and successful completion of the season. We believe the two rounds of revisions to the schedule announced in recent days give all involved the best chance of doing so.

“Our thanks go to all players, club staff, governments, broadcasters, partners, and venues whose commitment to the KFC BBL has ensured its continuation this season.”

Green has implored Thunder fans to head to the SCG and show their colours at this Saturday’s (January 15) GambleAware Sydney Smash against the Sixers.

“We do come back to Sydney on the 15th for the Sydney Smash and we hope to turn the SCG green,” he said. “We’d love to pack it out with as much green as possible.”

Ticket holders for Sydney Thunder v Melbourne Renegades at Sydney Showground Stadium will be contacted directly by Ticketmaster regarding the refund process. Sydney Thunder Members will be contacted by the club in the coming days.
