Plenty of action away from the pitch for Sydney-based fans who make the trip to Canberra

With their team playing two games at picturesque Manuka Oval, Thunder’s Sydney-based supporters have two tremendous reasons to explore the delights and treasures of the nation’s capital during this summer’s Big Bash League tournament.

On Monday 6 December, Sydney Thunder play against the Brisbane Heat at Manuka Oval with the game starting at 7.15pm, then on Tuesday 28 December the men in green take on the Perth Scorchers with that match also starting at 7.15pm. Tickets are now on sale, with family-friendly prices starting from $5 for kids, $25 for adults and $50 for families. Click here to buy now.

While the cricket under the bright lights of Manuka will be fast and furious, there’s plenty of action away from the pitch for Sydney-based fans who make the leisurely three-hour drive.

There’s opportunities to visit the region’s famed museums, art galleries, historic buildings, while those keen to enjoy the outdoors can visit wineries, enjoy mountain treks, or take on the area’s renowned bike trails.

Wicketkeeper Matt Gilkes, who started played grade cricket in Canberra as a 16-year-old, said what’s always impressed him about Canberra is it appeals to all tastes and interests.

“Anyone from Sydney who wants to base a Canberra getaway around either of our games won’t be disappointed,” said Gilkes. “It has so many attractions, they definitely won’t be short on things to do.

“The Australian War Memorial is world class, and is a wonderful tribute to our veterans. As a schoolkid I loved going to Questacon, which is an interactive science museum, especially for children, and Parliament House is worth taking a look at.

“However, cricket fans will love attending Manuka Oval, it’s a great place to watch cricket from, and it’s been the scene for some special BBL moments.”
