Spin bowler Tarik Viswasam embraces community tournament as golden opportunity

After gaining selection in the team that will represent Sydney’s Sri Lankan community in the ninth edition of the HomeWorld Thunder Nation Cup, spin bowler Tarik Viswasam described the tournament as a blessing for ‘hidden skill and talent’.

Sri Lanka, who finished as semi-finalists in last summer’s competition, selected their 10-player squad following last Sunday’s competitive trial session at Greenlees Park, Concord.

Viswasam – who boasts that cricket is in his blood – said his selection in the Sri Lankan team as an achievement that will expose him to any number of opportunities.

“Being able to represent the Sri Lankan community through the HomeWorld Thunder Nation Cup provides so many valuable opportunities to celebrate culture and community through cricket,” he said.

“I think it also provides such a great opportunity for hidden skill and talent to be showcased – and recognised – on a bigger stage.

“It’s a proud moment to be given the opportunity to represent your community and country, no matter the level or format.”

Viswasam, proudly described his selection for the Sri Lankan community was the crowning moment of a lifetime passion for cricket and an appreciation for the many wonderful things – such as making friendships, achieving goals, and testing oneself – that the sport provides.

“Having been born and raised in Australia, I was fortunate enough to have had the opportunity to participate in organised sports and represent various teams at multiple levels,” he said.

“Cricket is in the blood… it always found a way into our household conversations, dinner reservations or even family gatherings — this is where such pride and passion for the sport was developed, and the love of the game continues to grow ever so strong.

“So, I’m looking forward to playing alongside the rest of the Sri Lankan community, all from different walks of life however, for one cause.”

Trudi Busch, Director of Marketing, Sponsorship and Community at HomeWorld, spoke highly of the event.

“We love the pride and passion that is part of the HomeWorld Thunder Nation Cup every year,” she said.

“It is clear to see how much it means to all the players to have an opportunity to trial, and possibly go on to represent their culture and community.

“We are thrilled at the level of participation this year and look forward to watching each of the teams play in the upcoming tournament.”
