Buoyed by yesterday’s news that inspirational captain Rachael Haynes will return to the WBBL after a season off during WBBL|07 last year, fans are set for the first full fixture in front of their home crowds in three seasons.

Thunder will play at four ‘home’ venues throughout the WBBL and BBL, catapulting the players and the club to all corners of the Thunder Nation with fixtures at Blacktown International Sports Park, Sydney Showground Stadium, Canberra’s Manuka Oval and Albury’s Lavington Sports Ground.

In a huge win for fans, Sydney Thunder will play more WBBL|08 matches in their home markets than any other team. It will be the first time the Thunder have played in Sydney since their title winning season of WBBL|06 and their first sojourn in Canberra for three seasons.

Haynes’ outfit kick off the season with three straight matches at Blacktown, a pair of clashes with the Hurricanes on October 14 and 18, sandwiching a huge October 16 match against the reigning champion Scorchers.

The blockbuster first Sydney Smash of the season against the Sixers will be played at Blacktown on November 2, while Thunder’s latest foray into Canberra will feature the Melbourne Renegades on November 15.

Manuka Oval will be the focus the following month when the Thunder have the honour of kicking off the BBL with the season’s first match – against the Melbourne Stars on December 13. The Thunder will return to Canberra to face the Renegades on January 19.

After playing in the season opener, Thunder then plays its four Sydney Showground Stadium matches, starting with Adelaide Strikers on December 16; Brisbane Heat on December 27; the Sixers on January 8, and Perth Scorchers on January 13.

The Thunder will also play an historic first competition game in the Riverina, when they host the Hobart Hurricanes at Albury’s Lavington Sports Ground on New Year’s Eve.

Excitement around the BBL is rising for this summer with the inaugural Overseas Player Draft set to take place in Melbourne – and also be available on Foxtel and Kayo Sports – on Sunday August 28.
