The chance to play alongside fellow prodigy Phoebe Litchfield and help lead a team on the up was the deciding factor in rising star Georgia Voll signing with Sydney Thunder for at least the next three Weber WBBL seasons.

Voll arrives in Western Sydney for WBBL|10 having played 58 matches over four seasons with Brisbane Heat and adds considerable depth to Thunder’s top order and off spinning stocks.

The Toowoomba raised 20-year-old has long been considered one of Australian cricket’s best young talents, awarded the player of the tournament at the 2019/20 Under 18 National Championships and making her Women’s National Cricket League debut at just 16.

Earlier this week she was named as part of a series of Australia A squads to take on India A next month.

The former member of the Queensland Rugby League Under 18 Girl’s Performance Program had offers from several clubs but the part time barista said a chat with Thunder coach Lisa Keightley was key to her decision to head south.

“I’m really excited about the opportunity to come down and wear the lime green and represent Western Sydney,” Voll said.

“I never expected myself to play for a New South Wales team, to be honest, but after talking to Lisa and the guys down there, I’m super excited for the opportunity, and it’s a really good young group coming through.

“Lisa was quite clear on the role she wants me to play and what she wants me to do and that sort of got me over the line.

“I liked what the Thunder were about last year, really playing as a team and getting around each other on and off the field.

“That’s a team that I want to be a part of, and I’m really excited to see where this group ends up over the next three years. It’s an exciting young group to be a part of.”

And then there is the attraction of being part of a lineup with 21-year-old Litchfield, now a fully-fledged member of the Australian Women’s Team and set to enter her sixth season with Thunder.

“I’m really good mates with Phoebe, so to be able to play alongside her again is really exciting for me,” she said.

“We’ve been really good mates for quite a few years now. We first met each other playing for a CA11 as Under 15’s, when we played in the Under 18’s tournament, and that’s sort of where she started to shine.

“We bonded really well and now, six years later, I’ve got one of my really good mates and I’m really excited to walk out on the field with her again.

“It’s been, it’s been a long time, but hopefully we can score some runs at the top of the order for Thunder. I think it’s really exciting.”

Sydney Thunder General Manager, Trent Copeland, said Voll was one of the most sought after talents in the country.

“Georgia has shown since the day she arrived on the scene that she is a special talent with both bat and ball,” Copeland said.

“If you were to pinpoint the next young star to crack the Australian setup, Georgia is it. The 200 (runs) for Australia A in red ball cricket, two 100’s in WNCL last season and the all round capabilities we’ve seen for the Heat in WBBL. This is a huge signing for the club.

“The fact that she has chosen to come to Western Sydney and Thunder for three years, when there were several other clubs chasing her signature, is a testament to the squad and culture Lisa Keightley is building.”

Sydney Thunder yesterday announced they will call Drummoyne Oval home in WBBL|10 with the full fixture set to be announced next week.
