Thunder set to launch WBBL|08 campaign at home at Blacktown International Sportspark on October 14
The Thunder Nation will reunite for the Weber WBBL on home turf this summer with confirmation Sydney Thunder will launch their title campaign at home at Blacktown International Sportspark on October 14.
While the full WBBL|08 fixture is slated to be announced tomorrow it has been revealed that Trevor Griffin’s Thunder team will open the season with three straight matches at Blacktown in the heart of Sydney’s west.
The Thunder will start the season in the tournament’s second match on Friday October 14 against the Hobart Hurricanes, before returning two days later for a mouthwatering clash with the defending champion Perth Scorchers.
Then on Tuesday October 18, the Thunder will finish their initial Blacktown International Sportspark swing with a return match against the Hurricanes.
All Clubs will play home matches during the season for the first time in three years, with the Thunder returning to their home field for the first time since WBBL|06, when the entire season was staged in Sydney under bio-secure conditions.
Head of Thunder, Andrew Gilchrist, said returning to play at home would inspire fans and players alike.
“We played all of our matches in Sydney two seasons ago, including a heap of games at Blacktown and we went on to win our second WBBL title,” Gilchrist said.
“Even though that final was at North Sydney Oval, we had so much support from the Thunder Nation and I am certain that memories of that night will still be at the forefront of everyone’s mind.
“For us to be able to get back to engaging our fans, who we believe are the most passionate and supportive in the League, is just so exciting and something we can’t wait for.”
The Weber WBBL|08 Finals series will take place following the conclusion of the regular season on November 20, with dates and details of each match to be confirmed.
The WBBL fixture will be announced tomorrow, with tickets for this summer’s Thunder WBBL and BBL matches on-sale to the public at 2pm, August 18 (AEST).
