Tale of Two Extremes: India rakes in $230 million, while Pakistan receives pennies from ICC revenue

Must Read

The ICC recently reported its revenue boost from the ODI World Cup 2023. Hosts India generated substantial revenue, while Pakistan did not fare as well. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) earned a notably low amount from the high-profile India vs. Pakistan match held at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

India earned 38.5% of the ICC’s total income, whereas the PCB received only 5.75%. The ICC’s revenue primarily comes from broadcast rights and title sponsorships.

“A new economic report released today by the International Cricket Council (ICC) reveals that the ICC Men’s World Cup 2023, the biggest Cricket World Cup ever, generated an incredible total economic impact of $1.39 billion (11,637 crore Indian rupees) for the economy of India,” an ICC press release stated.

The revenue distribution between the two sides has been markedly uneven, with India receiving the majority of the share. The data shows that India secures a significant portion of the revenue, while the PCB ends up with a relatively small amount of $34.51 million compared to its major rival in cricket.

The BCCI benefits from substantial revenue due to numerous sponsorships associated with India. Although the India vs. Pakistan match is a major revenue generator, Pakistan earned less from it compared to England and Australia.

“The World Cup was organised by India from Oct 5 to Nov 19 in ten cities Ahmedabad [the world’s largest cricket stadium], Bengaluru, Chennai, Delhi, Dharamsala, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai and Pune, proved to be a catalyst for growth across various sectors, contributing significantly to India’s economy and showcasing the value of ICC events. Direct investment into staging the event from both the ICC and the BCCI combined with a programme of stadium upgrades via the State Cricket Associations delivered direct benefits to Indian businesses across a range of sectors,” read the ICC statement.
