WA Cricket has committed to strengthening the game in Southeast Asia, through a new agreement with the governing body of cricket in Indonesia.
Through its inaugural memorandum of understanding with Persatuan Cricket Indonesia, WA Cricket will support the development of young players, coaches, and facilities in the region, cementing its reputation as a leader in the sport.
An initial 18-month period will focus on female development, with a plan to develop similar initiatives for young male players and their coaches in the future.
A recent meeting at the Australian Embassy in Jakarta involving Embassy staff and representatives from the International Cricket Council and Persatuan Cricket Indonesia, was the first of many initiatives to promote this new partnership.
WA Cricket CEO Christina Matthews said the agreement is an exciting step forward.
“The partnership between Australian and Indonesian cricket has developed over several years and the expansion of the sport across many of the provinces across Indonesia is an indication of the growth in support for the game,” Ms Matthews said.
“WA Cricket seeks to be a leader in Australian sport, and we are both proud and honoured to extend our reach even further as we share our skills and knowledge with athletes, coaches and administrators in Indonesia.”
Planned initiatives to roll out across the 2024-25 season include visits to Indonesia by WA Cricket coaching staff to conduct specialised training session, along with guidance from specialist WACA Ground curators to assist in the expansion and development of quality cricket grounds and wickets in North Sumatra, Bali, and Jakarta.
Reciprocal visits to WA Cricket facilities by Indonesian ground staff will also be facilitated.
It is hoped that selected Indonesian players will be invited to the WACA Ground to spend time with staff, coaches, and curators, with plans underway for practise matches between Western Australian and Indonesian female athletes.
