West Indies T20 vice-captain Roston Chase is aiming for a 3-0 series sweep over Sri Lanka in their ongoing T20 series, which he believes would significantly boost the Caribbean side’s chances of reclaiming the number-one spot in the ICC Men’s T20I rankings by the end of 2024.
The West Indies secured a comfortable five-wicket win in the first T20I on Sunday, taking a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three series.
Chase, enjoying a standout year in T20 cricket, hopes the team can secure victories in the second match on Tuesday and the final match on Thursday to gain crucial points and climb from their current third-place ranking.
The West Indies have 255 points, just two behind second-placed Australia, while India leads with 268 points.
With a three-match T20 series against England scheduled before the year’s end, Chase believes strong performances in both series could propel West Indies back to the top spot, a position they last held in 2016.
“We would love to get a 3-0 win in the series because we want to challenge for that number-one spot by the end of the year,” Chase said.
Despite the opening game victory, Chase noted areas for improvement in both batting and bowling as they prepare for the remaining matches.
“It was a good game and a good start from the guys… but I just thought that we fell down a bit in the middle overs. We lost a couple of quick wickets, so if there’s one thing to focus on, it’s not losing wickets in clusters,” Chase said.
“I thought the bowlers started well in the Power Play… but I think picking up one or two more wickets in the middle would make it easier for the team to execute at the back end,” he added.
