Bio

David Mahoney MBE is currently serving as the Chief Operating Officer at the England and Wales Cricket Board Limited, a role he has held since January 2019. He leads the ECB’s Internal Operations, working closely with the CEO to implement the organization’s strategic plans.

Mahoney has also served as the Chief Strategy Officer at ECB since January 2018. Mahoney was previously the Director of Strategy, Policy and International starting in August 2016. His strategy roles involve conducting analysis on future trends and setting strategy and priorities for the ECB, including reporting on delivery against strategic priorities for the CEO and Board.

Mahoney was a key architect of the ECB’s five-year strategy Inspiring Generations and its South Asian Action Plan. He was also central in the ECB’s response to Covid-19 as cricket led the way in the return of professional and recreational sport.

A lawyer by practice, Mahoney specialized in competition and media law before joining Ofcom, a UK Telecommunication company. He worked at Ofcom for 10 years between 2005 and 2016 in various capacities including Chief Advisor to the CEO, Director of Policy and Government Affairs.

Mahoney was awarded an MBE for his services to sport in the 2021 New Year’s Honours. 

Mahoney was appointed to the Sport England Board in October 2019, where he is serving his first three-year term.

Mahoney is a Graduate of the University of Oxford.
