Bio
Lalit Modi is an Indian businessman and former cricket administrator. He is credited with the creation of the Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2008. He served as the Chairman and Commissioner of the IPL for the first three seasons from 2008 to 2010.
Modi also founded the Airtel Champions League (CLT20) in 2008, with the last edition being played in 2014 due to lack of audience interest.
Modi also serves Elephant Family – a Non-Profit Organization protecting Asian Wildlife – as a Patron, a role he has been performing since Jan 2008. He has also been serving British Asian Trust, another Non-Profit Organization since March 2006. The British Asian Trust is working to eradicate poverty from the South Asian Community.
Modi has been the President and Managing Director of Modi Enterprises since 1992. Modi Enterprises is an Industrial conglomerate founded and run by the Modi family. He is also the Executive Director of Godfrey Phillips India, where he is involved with the strategic planning and direction for the company. Godfrey Phillips India is one of the country’s largest tobacco companies.
Modi Enterprises also includes Modi Entertainment Networks (MEN), a joint venture with Walt Disney Pictures, bringing Disney’s content to India including Fashion TV. He was the President of Fashion TV India, appointed in April 1994, and was the Vice-Chairman of the Walt Disney Company India from Aug 1993 to July 2003. MEN became the pan-India distributor of ESPN on a ten-year contract worth $975 million with MEN in tern collecting money from Indian cable companies in exchange for the broadcasting ESPN.
In 2004, Modi ran for President of Rajasthan Cricket Association and won, allowing him to sit on the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) as Vice-President from Dec 2005 to Sep 2010. He was heavily involved in the commercial operations of the BCCI and was responsible for increasing the cricket board’s revenues seven-fold between 2005 and 2008. During his time at BCCI, he was involved in a number of deals including the Team Sponsorship Deal for Team India with Sahara Group for 4 years. He also concluded the IPL Media Rights Deal with Sony worth $1.26 Billion.
Previously, Modi has served Punjab Cricket Association as the Vice-President from March 2001 to Feb 2015.
Modi also served International Tobacco Company Limited as President from Jan 1987 to Dec 1991. He trained and ran the production subsidiary of Godfrey Phillips Limited.
Modi also launched an online Lottery Business in Kerala Called Sixo.
Modi has also been volunteering at the Champalimaud Foundation since May 2018 to ensure the foundation becomes the Global foremost in providing the quality cancer cure centers at affordable prices.
Modi, born in Delhi, studied electrical engineering at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina USA and Business Administration at Pace University, New York.
