Bio
Philip Verant “Phil” Simmons is a Trinidadian cricket coach and former all-rounder. He is the current coach of the West Indies men’s cricket team, having been appointed to this role in 2019.
Simmons played cricket for a number of first-class sides in the West Indies and England as well as international cricket for the West Indies cricket team. He was voted a Wisden Cricketer of the Year in 1997.
Shortly after Simmons’ retirement, he embarked on his coaching career which has continued consistently over a decade. Previously, Simmons was the Head Coach of numerous national cricket teams such as: the Zimbabwe Cricket Team, the Afghanistan National Cricket Team, the Ireland National Cricket Team and others.
Among his highlights as a coach: In 2016, he led the West Indies team to a historic second T20 World Cup victory in India. At the time the former top ranking cricket team was in a period of significant struggles, and Simmons was tasked with bringing the team from near the bottom of the top ten rankings and back into prominence, which he did successfully.
