Bio

Rudie van Vuuren is a Namibian senior cricket administrator, Physician, conservationist and a former sportsman, specializing in both Cricket and Rugby Union. He is the first sportsman from any country to feature in both Cricket and Rugby World Cup.

As a cricketer, van Vuuren featured in 5 ODIs, making his debut against Pakistan in the 2003 ICC ODI Cricket World Cup and eight months later made his first appearance for Namibia in the 2003 Rugby World Cup, coming on as a substitute against Romania. He was part of the 1999 Namibia’s Rugby World Cup team but did not play in any of the matches.

van Vuuren played an important role in helping Namibia qualify for the 2003 ICC ODI Cricket World Cup via the 2001 ICC Trophy, where Namibia won 10 consecutive matches before losing the final to Netherlands. He featured in 21 List games for Namibia and finished the 2001 ICC Trophy as the leading wicket taker for Namibia with 13 scalps.

van Vuuren is currently serving Cricket Namibia as a President, a role he has held since August 2018, and was re-elected in August 2022 for another 2-year term.

van Vuuren and his partner Marlice, along with their long time friend Chris Heunis, founded a conservation tourism organization and Wildlife Sanctuary, named Naankuse. He has been the Managing Director of the Naankuse Group since August 2005 and the Group CEO of Naankuse since Jan 2006.

van Vuuren is also a qualified medical doctor as well as an obstetrician who has extensively treated HIV/AIDS patients. He helped to deliver 70 babies in his clinic in Windhoek within the space of 8 months between the 2003 Cricket and Rugby World Cup.

van Vuuren completed his doctoral degree from the Stellenbosch University in South Africa in the early 1990s and is currently the personal physician of the President of Namibia, Dr Hage Geingob.
